theglobalsun – Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Santiago Bueno has joined Mexican side Club America on loan until the end of the season. The agreement includes an option for Club America to sign the Uruguay international permanently.
The 27-year-old defender joined Wolves from Spanish club Girona in August 2023. He signed a five-year contract after making a name for himself in Spanish football.
Bueno made 70 Premier League appearances for Wolves across three seasons. He became a regular part of the club’s defensive options during his time in England’s top flight.

The Uruguay international scored his first Wolves goal last September. He found the net during a 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham.
Bueno also played 29 league matches last season. Wolves were eventually relegated to the Championship after spending eight consecutive years in the Premier League.
The defender did not feature for Wolves at the beginning of the current season. His absence came as the club managed its squad following relegation from the top flight.
Bueno has now moved to Club America, who currently sit at the top of the Liga MX table. The loan gives him an opportunity to secure regular football while continuing his career in Mexico.
The agreement also includes an option to buy, giving Club America the opportunity to make the transfer permanent. Wolves will therefore retain control over the defender’s future until the Mexican club decides whether to exercise that option.
Wolves technical director Matt Jackson explained that arranging Bueno’s departure was complicated by the timing of the move. The club had already reached its domestic transfer deadline when other international markets remained open.
Wolves Explain Bueno’s Loan Move
“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” Jackson told Wolves’ official website. He explained that Wolves knew other markets could provide a suitable destination for Bueno after their deadline had passed.
“We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline,” Jackson said. However, the club faced a squad-size issue that ultimately affected the defender.
“When we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out,” Jackson added. Bueno subsequently became the player to leave Wolves on loan.
The move means Wolves will temporarily lose a defender with extensive Premier League experience. His 70 appearances across three seasons provide Bueno with significant experience at the highest level of English football.
His 29 league appearances last season also made him a regular contributor during Wolves’ final Premier League campaign. However, the club’s relegation changed its squad requirements ahead of the new Championship season.
Club America now offers Bueno the chance to compete regularly in Liga MX. The Mexican club’s position at the top of the table also gives him an opportunity to contribute to a team competing near the summit.
For Wolves, the loan provides a solution to their squad situation while keeping Bueno under contract. The purchase option could eventually lead to a permanent transfer if Club America chooses to activate it.

Bueno will now focus on making an impact in Mexico during the remainder of the season. His performances could influence whether Club America ultimately pursues a permanent deal.
Wolves will meanwhile monitor his progress from England. The club can assess the defender’s development while retaining an interest in his long-term future.
The loan represents a new chapter for Bueno after three seasons in the Premier League. He will now look to establish himself with Club America and continue his career in Mexican football.
