theglobalsun – Wycombe Wanderers have signed goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith on a free transfer as they strengthen their squad following a serious injury to Matt Macey.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper arrives at Adams Park with considerable experience in the Championship and League One. Wildsmith has made 172 appearances across the two divisions for Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Barnsley.
He spent the final part of last season with Middlesbrough but did not make an appearance for the club.

Wildsmith brings promotion experience
Wildsmith enjoyed a successful spell with Derby County. Helping the Rams secure promotion while also earning the Golden Glove award for recording the most clean sheets during the 2023-24 season.
His move to Wycombe comes after Macey suffered a cruciate ligament injury during pre-season. Leaving the club needing additional cover in goal.
Wycombe director of football strategy Tom Stockwell said Wildsmith’s experience would provide valuable depth, particularly with first-choice goalkeeper Conor Hazard expected to be away on international duty several times during the season.
The club believes the experienced goalkeeper can help provide greater competition across all competitions while offering reliable cover when Hazard is unavailable. His arrival also gives the coaching staff another experienced option during a demanding period of the campaign. Strengthening the squad’s overall goalkeeping depth.

Wycombe prepare for Reading clash
Wildsmith joins Wycombe at a challenging point in the season. The Chairboys have been without a permanent manager since Michael Duff was dismissed earlier this month.
Interim head coach Tom Hounsell is currently overseeing the team, with Wycombe sitting 14th in the League One table. The club will therefore look to maintain stability on the pitch while the search for a permanent manager continues.
The club will host Reading on Saturday, with Wildsmith now available as part of the squad’s goalkeeping options. His arrival gives Hounsell another experienced player to call upon as Wycombe prepare for the upcoming fixture.
Wildsmith’s previous experience in English football could also help strengthen the squad during the second half of the campaign. His competition for the goalkeeping position may provide additional depth while giving the coaching staff more options when selecting the matchday squad.
His arrival gives Wycombe additional experience between the posts as the club looks to navigate the remainder of the season and compete across its various commitments. The goalkeeper will now aim to settle into his new surroundings and contribute to the team’s efforts on the pitch.
