theglobalsun – Shrewsbury Town have re-signed goalkeeper Cameron Gregory on a short-term contract after an injury ruled out second-choice goalkeeper Sam Proctor. The move gives manager Gavin Cowan additional cover between the posts as Shrewsbury prepare for another League Two fixture.
Gregory, 26, returns to Oteley Road for his second spell with the club. The goalkeeper previously came through Shrewsbury’s academy as a teenager before continuing his career in the non-league system. His return also reunites him with Cowan, who previously managed him at Brackley Town.
Sam Proctor Injury Prompts Goalkeeping Move
Proctor, an Aston Villa youngster, has picked up a knock and is expected to miss the upcoming local derby against Crewe Alexandra. The 19-year-old had provided important depth in Shrewsbury’s goalkeeping department before suffering the injury.
Gregory is expected to provide immediate cover for the squad. Although he could initially find himself on the bench for Saturday’s match at Gresty Road. His experience gives Cowan another option while Proctor works his way back from the injury.
Cowan Welcomes Experienced Goalkeeper
Cowan said Gregory’s existing connection with Shrewsbury made the temporary move particularly useful. The manager also highlighted the goalkeeper’s familiarity with the local area and his previous experience working under him at Brackley Town.
The Shrewsbury manager described Gregory as a talented goalkeeper and welcomed his return to the club. Cowan also suggested that Gregory could have secured another move earlier in the season if not for the circumstances surrounding his return to Shrewsbury.
Shrewsbury Prepare for Crewe Derby
Shrewsbury head into the meeting with Crewe Alexandra looking to collect their first away point of the League Two season. The club have lost their opening three away matches. Making Saturday’s local derby another opportunity to improve their results on the road.
Their recent home form has provided some encouragement, however. Shrewsbury secured a second consecutive home victory last week after beating Northampton Town. They will now attempt to carry that momentum into a difficult fixture against an unbeaten Crewe side.

Takeover Consortium Receives Further Approval
Gregory’s arrival comes as Shrewsbury continue to deal with developments away from the pitch. Craig Graham and Will Dotson, two members of the American consortium seeking to take control of the club, have received approval from the Independent Football Regulator.
Miami-based businessman Scott Davidson, who leads the consortium, had already received regulatory approval. Former United States international goalkeeper Brad Friedel is still waiting for the necessary clearance as the proposed takeover process continues.
Graham is already involved in British football as chairman of Scottish League Two club The Spartans. Dotson, a New York-based financier, is expected to become a director of the restructured Shrewsbury board if long-serving owner Roland Wycherley’s proposed sale is completed.
