Ashby arrives with previous experience of working under Wilshere during their time together at West Ham United. A connection that played a key role in bringing the defender to Kenilworth Road.

Wilshere Reunion Helped Seal the Move

Ashby and Wilshere first crossed paths between 2018 and 2020 when both were at West Ham United. With Ashby progressing through the club’s academy while Wilshere was part of the senior squad.

Speaking after completing the move. Ashby admitted that reuniting with the Luton boss quickly convinced him that the club was the right destination.

“Being with him at West Ham, it was a bit of a little reunion for us. And after five minutes I said to my agent. ‘yes, I want to be here’,” Ashby told the club’s official website.

The defender believes Wilshere’s understanding of his personality and playing style will help him settle quickly.

“The main thing is he knows what kind of character I am already. And he knows what kind of player I am as well.

“So I think straightaway the philosophy matches my playing style. Which is perfect for me, and I think I can slot into the team and help them straight away.”

Ashby Looks to Build on Valuable Loan Experience

Although Ashby has yet to make his senior debut for Newcastle United. He has continued his development through several loan spells.

The former Scotland Under-21 international spent the second half of last season with Bradford City, where he helped the club reach the League One play-offs.

His performances provided valuable first-team experience and demonstrated his ability to compete consistently in English football.

Ashby joined Newcastle from West Ham United in 2023 in a transfer worth up to £3 million, but opportunities with the Magpies’ first team have remained limited.

The season-long move to Luton Town offers the defender another chance to gain regular competitive football while continuing his development under a manager already familiar with his strengths.

For Luton, Ashby’s arrival adds pace, energy and versatility to the right side of the defense as the Hatters prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.

The club will hope the defender’s previous League One experience and strong relationship with Wilshere allow him to make an immediate impact during his loan spell.
