theglobalsun – Coventry City have signed Switzerland centre-back Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth more than £17m. The 22-year-old defender has signed a four-year contract with the newly promoted Premier League club. Coventry will pay an initial £15.4m, with a further £1.7m available through add-ons. The agreement represents a major investment as Coventry prepare for their return to England’s top division.
Amenda was reportedly convinced to move to Coventry after discussions with manager Frank Lampard and the club’s recruitment staff. The defender said his first conversation with Lampard helped establish a sense of trust. He also said he was attracted by Coventry’s project and viewed the transfer as an important career step.

“After the first call with the gaffer, I felt the trust and I liked the project,” Amenda said. He added that he was excited to meet everyone at the club. The defender specifically mentioned his anticipation of meeting Coventry’s supporters and his new teammates.
Amenda also outlined the qualities he hopes to bring to his new team. He said he enjoys defending his goal but also likes playing with the ball. The centre-back described himself as calm in possession and believes that quality can help Coventry.
The Switzerland international was part of the national squad that reached the World Cup quarter-finals. However, Amenda did not make an appearance during the tournament. His inclusion nevertheless gave him experience within a major international squad and competition.
Coventry Continue Squad Building Ahead of First Premier League Campaign in 25 Years
Coventry are continuing their recruitment efforts after securing Amenda’s transfer. The Sky Blues remain interested in Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. However, the club has so far been unable to reach an agreement with Brighton over a potential deal.
Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen is reportedly being considered as an alternative target. The goalkeeping position could therefore remain an area Coventry seek to strengthen.
Lampard also signed a new contract with Coventry during the summer. His continued involvement provides stability after he helped guide the club to promotion. The manager will now oversee preparations for Coventry’s first top-flight campaign in 25 years.
Pre-season preparations have already started for the newly promoted side. Coventry opened their schedule with a 3-2 defeat against Wimbledon in a behind-closed-doors friendly. The match provided an early opportunity for Lampard to assess his squad before the competitive campaign begins.
The Sky Blues are scheduled to face Northampton Town and Espanyol in their next pre-season fixtures. Those matches will give Coventry further opportunities to integrate new arrivals. They will also allow Lampard to test different tactical combinations before the Premier League season starts.
Amenda’s arrival could be particularly important as Coventry prepare for the increased quality of opposition. Premier League clubs generally face greater attacking threats and deeper squads throughout the campaign. Coventry have therefore invested heavily in strengthening their options ahead of the challenge.
The defender’s ability to contribute in possession could also complement Lampard’s preferred approach. Amenda’s own comments indicate that he wants to contribute beyond his defensive responsibilities. His composure with the ball could become an important attribute during Coventry’s first season back in the top flight.

The £17m-plus transfer also represents one of the club’s biggest investments during its promotion rebuild. Coventry will expect Amenda to become an important part of their defence over the next four years. The player will now focus on adapting to his new surroundings and building relationships with his teammates.
