theglobalsun – Cambridge United have completed the emergency loan signing of goalkeeper Jack Walton from Preston North End ahead of a crucial period in their League Two promotion campaign.

Eastwood’s red card leaves him unavailable for Wednesday’s important clash against league leaders Bromley FC.

Young goalkeeper Ben Hughes replaced Eastwood during the Notts County match and made his league debut after previously appearing in four Vertu Trophy fixtures.

Although Hughes impressed after coming on, Cambridge manager Neil Harris admitted the club felt it would be too risky to rely entirely on the inexperienced goalkeeper during such a decisive stage of the season.

Harris Explains Decision to Bring in Experience

Neil Harris explained that while Eastwood’s dismissal was unfortunate. The club understood the pressure and emotions involved in such moments late in the campaign.

However, with promotion still very much at stake, Cambridge decided additional experience in goal was necessary.

Walton arrives with senior experience across both England and Scotland and is expected to provide immediate competition and stability between the posts.

The 27-year-old joined Preston last summer and has made five appearances for the club this season. Although he has not featured since January.

Before his move to Preston, Walton began his career at Barnsley FC and later enjoyed a successful loan spell with Dundee United.

During his two seasons in Scotland, Walton made more than 70 appearances and established himself as a dependable first-team goalkeeper.

Cambridge Continue Push for Immediate Promotion

Cambridge currently sit third in the League Two table with four matches remaining as they attempt to secure an immediate return to League One following last season’s relegation.

At this stage of the campaign, consistency and experience can become especially important, particularly in defensive positions such as goalkeeper.

Emergency loan signings are often used by clubs facing short-term injury or suspension problems. But they can also prove decisive during promotion races.

Harris said Walton arrived with strong references and immediately showed enthusiasm about joining the club for the final stretch of the season.

The manager also praised the goalkeeper’s mindset and character, suggesting those qualities played a significant role in Cambridge’s decision.

Walton Gets Fresh Opportunity

For Walton, the move offers a valuable opportunity for regular first-team football after limited appearances at Preston this season.

Goalkeepers often face difficult competition for places, making short-term loans an important way to maintain match sharpness and visibility.

Joining a club competing near the top of the table could also provide Walton with the chance to play a meaningful role in a promotion battle.

Cambridge’s upcoming match against Bromley now takes on even greater significance. With Walton potentially stepping directly into one of the biggest games of the club’s season.

As Cambridge continue their pursuit of automatic promotion. The experienced goalkeeper could quickly become an important figure during the final weeks of the campaign.
