The initial fee for Mukiele stands at £9.5 million, with a further £2.5 million in performance-related add-ons. This move follows Sunderland’s emphatic 3-0 win over West Ham in their Premier League return and highlights their ambition to solidify their place in the top flight.

Mukiele spent last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, making 24 appearances and playing alongside current Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka. He brings experience from top-level European football, including 35 Champions League appearances.

Speaking after the deal, Mukiele said he was excited to join the club. “It’s a new challenge and I’m happy to be here,” he said. “I saw the atmosphere of the stadium, and this is something I really like. The fans are very important in football, and especially in Sunderland. I came here to fight for them.”

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman praised the signing, calling Mukiele a versatile defender with rare athletic qualities. He noted Mukiele’s ability to operate both at centre-back and right-back, making him an ideal fit for the demands of Premier League football.

Sunderland’s Spending Nears Record Levels with Eye on Long-Term Growth

Mukiele’s arrival caps off one of the most active summer windows by a newly promoted Premier League club. With 12 new players brought in, Sunderland’s total spend is now just £500,000 shy of Nottingham Forest’s record-breaking £142 million spree in 2022.

In addition to Mukiele, Sunderland have made several high-profile signings. Granit Xhaka arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, winger Simon Adingra joined from Brighton, and club-record signing Habib Diarra cost around £30 million from Strasbourg. To balance their spending, Sunderland offloaded key assets. Jobe Bellingham joined Borussia Dortmund, while Tom Watson moved to Brighton. Combined, those transfers brought in around £37 million.

Mukiele began his professional career at Stade Lavallois before moving to Montpellier and then RB Leipzig. His 2022 move to PSG saw him win five trophies in France’s top division. Adding to his reputation as a reliable and experienced defender.

Moreover, the club’s aggressive yet strategic approach in the transfer market signals a long-term vision that goes beyond simply surviving the season.

With that in mind, as Premier League action gets underway and the squad nears completion. All eyes will be on how quickly these new signings adapt and gel. Given his experience, Mukiele’s pedigree and attitude suggest he will be a key figure in Sunderland’s plans moving forward.
