theglobalsun – Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of goalkeeper Jack Bonham from Championship club Stoke City. The experienced shot-stopper joins the League One side on an 18-month deal.
The transfer follows changes in Bolton’s goalkeeping department earlier this week. Loan goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe returned to Chelsea on Wednesday after his temporary spell ended.
Bonham arrives with significant experience in English professional football. The 32-year-old has played across several divisions during his career and adds depth to Bolton’s squad.
The move also reunites him with Bolton manager Steven Schumacher. Bonham previously worked under Schumacher during their time together at Stoke City.
Their prior relationship played an important role in the goalkeeper’s decision. Bonham said the opportunity to work again with the Bolton manager made the transfer straightforward.
“We’ve worked together before,” Bonham told the club’s official website. “He knows what I’m capable of and knows I can play at this level and above.”
The goalkeeper described the decision as an easy one once the opportunity emerged. He said joining Bolton offered a clear chance to return to regular competitive football.
“It was a no-brainer for me when this came up,” Bonham said. “A club this size and the chance to play again was something I couldn’t turn down.”
Bolton hope the signing will bring stability and experience to their defensive unit. Goalkeepers often play a crucial role during demanding league campaigns.
Bonham Targets Playing Time as Stoke Changes Goalkeeping Options
Bonham’s move also follows developments within Stoke City’s squad. The Championship club recently signed Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu on loan.
The arrival of another goalkeeper at Stoke reduced Bonham’s chances of regular playing time. As a result, the experienced player sought a new opportunity elsewhere.
Bonham explained that circumstances at Stoke had changed in recent weeks. He said those developments helped open the door for a transfer.
“I needed to get out and play and things were evolving at Stoke,” Bonham said. “When the opportunity arose here, it was one I jumped at.”
The goalkeeper also highlighted Bolton’s long-term potential as a key factor in his decision. He believes the club has the foundations to achieve greater success.
“Seeing the last few years where they’ve been and where they could be made me want to join,” Bonham said. “I want to be part of that journey.”
Bolton Wanderers have been rebuilding in recent seasons following difficult financial and sporting periods. The club is working to regain its position in the higher levels of English football.

Bonham hopes his experience can support that ambition. He said the team’s long-term goal of returning to the Premier League is an exciting prospect.
The goalkeeper’s arrival provides competition within Bolton’s squad for the remainder of the season. The 18-month contract also offers stability for the club’s goalkeeping options.
As Bolton continue their campaign, Bonham’s experience and familiarity with Schumacher’s system could prove valuable. Both player and club will aim to build momentum in the coming months.
