theglobalsun – British tennis player Tara Moore has received a four-year doping ban following a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling. This decision overturns an earlier independent tribunal that had cleared her 18 months ago. Moore tested positive for nandrolone and boldenone during a tournament in Bogota, Colombia, in April 2022. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) appealed the initial clearance, and CAS upheld the appeal.

Moore’s ban starts immediately but will be reduced by 19 months to account for her provisional suspension since May 2022. At 32 years old, Moore was Britain’s top-ranked women’s doubles player at the time of her provisional ban. The initial tribunal had ruled her positive test was due to contaminated meat and found no fault or negligence on her part.
Despite the tribunal’s decision, CAS concluded Moore failed to prove the high levels of nandrolone in her sample resulted from contaminated meat. The panel also decided she did not establish that the doping violation was unintentional. This ruling means she cannot compete again until the start of the 2028 tennis season.
Impact on Moore’s Career and ITIA’s Position
Moore described the 19 months of suspension as a period of lost time and emotional distress. She also expressed frustration over damage to her reputation. After the tribunal’s initial ruling, Moore returned to competition in April 2024, mainly playing on the ITF World Tour. She had qualified for major tournaments such as Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open in recent years.
Despite her return, the CAS ruling severely impacts her career prospects. Earning potential for doubles players is generally limited, making this ban especially challenging. The ban effectively sidelines her during what could have been valuable competitive years.
Karen Moorhouse, CEO of the ITIA, emphasized the organization’s rigorous process for appealing decisions. She stated the appeal was based on independent scientific advice, which questioned the explanation for the high nandrolone levels in Moore’s sample. Moorhouse assured the public that the ITIA reviews each case carefully and will respond to any questions about this ruling after further review.

This ruling reflects the strict stance on doping violations in tennis and the high burden of proof required to overturn positive tests. Moore’s case highlights the complexities involved when contamination claims arise. As she faces a lengthy ban, her focus may now shift toward rebuilding her career once eligible to compete again. Meanwhile, the tennis community watches closely as the sport continues to enforce anti-doping regulations to maintain fair play and integrity.
