Williams Joins Barnet After Leaving Crewe

theglobalsun – Wales Under-21 International Becomes Dean Brennan’s First Summer Addition. Barnet have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season by signing defender Zac Williams on a free transfer following his departure from Crewe Alexandra.

The 22-year-old arrives at the Hive Stadium after spending almost his entire footballing career with Crew. Where he progressed through the club’s academy and established himself as a regular first-team player.

Williams joined the Railwaymen’s youth system at the age of six and eventually made his senior breakthrough in 2021. Over the following years, he accumulated 124 appearances for the League Two club, gaining valuable experience despite his young age.

Last season, the defender spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock. Where he featured in eight matches.

Although he returned to Crewe at the end of the loan spell, the club decided not to offer him a new contract. Allowing Barnet to secure his signature without paying a transfer fee.

Williams also brings international experience to his new club, having represented Wales at Under-21 level. The defender said Barnet’s recent progress and playing style convinced him that joining the club was the right decision.

“After seeing the progression of the club over the last few years and the style of play that has been implemented. It suits me a lot, so it was a no-brainer for me,” Williams told the club’s official website.

His arrival comes after Barnet narrowly missed out on a play-off place last season. The Bees finished eighth in League Two, ending the campaign just two points outside the top seven.

The club will be hoping that additions such as Williams can help bridge that gap and strengthen their promotion challenge in the coming season.

Dean Brennan Praises Experience and Potential

Williams becomes manager Dean Brennan’s first signing of the summer transfer window. Brennan welcomed the defender to the club and highlighted the combination of youth and experience he will bring to the squad.

“For a young player, Zac’s got plenty of EFL games under his belt and he’s chosen to join us over other clubs. Which is extremely positive,” Brennan said.

The manager also emphasized Williams’ versatility and long-term potential. “He gives us great balance down the left-hand side and in the backline and he’s got a bright future with us.”

Williams is capable of playing in multiple defensive positions, making him a valuable addition to Brennan’s squad. His experience in League Two and the Scottish Premiership could prove useful as Barnet aim to build on last season’s encouraging campaign.

Signing players with proven experience but room for further development has become an important part of Barnet’s recruitment strategy. Williams fits that profile perfectly.

Despite being only 22, he already has more than 100 senior appearances and experience at both domestic and international youth levels. For the defender, the move offers a fresh start after leaving the club where he spent most of his career.
